Choosing the Right Cake Size for a Birthday Party
How many people does a one pound cake feed? A practical guide to sizing your cake so nobody misses out and nothing goes to waste.
Cakes here are sold by weight rather than by diameter, which trips people up when they are trying to work out how much to order. Here is a practical way to think about it.
A rough serving guide
As a general rule, expect around four to six dessert-sized slices from a one pound cake. Two pounds comfortably covers a family birthday of roughly eight to twelve people. Three pounds and above suits larger gatherings, or when cake is the main dessert rather than one of several.
These are guides, not rules. If you are cutting smaller slices to hand round with tea, you will get more out of each pound than if cake is being served as a plated dessert.
Size changes the price, not just the portions
Because cakes are priced per pound, doubling the size roughly doubles the base price. A chocolate fudge at Rs. 1,600 per pound is Rs. 3,200 for two pounds, before any frosting upgrade or theme. You can check per-pound prices for every flavour on the menu.
Buttercream adds Rs. 300 per pound, so it scales with size too. A decoration theme is a flat Rs. 500 regardless of how big the cake is.
When to size up
Order a little more than you think you need if guests are likely to take a slice home, if there are children who will want seconds, or if the cake is doubling as the dessert. Left-over cake is a much better problem than running out halfway round the room.
